Lola

June 2010

Hi, my name is Lola and I am very scared!  I came from a kennel in downtown Detroit (a bad part of town) where I lived with lots of other dogs who were trained a lot in protection work, I guess is what they called it?  Lot's of big men worked there and would train us and were very mean, except one guy.  It was always loud there and many sirens and I would hear gun shots all the time.  I am very afraid of guns or loud bangs that remind me of guns.

The kennel where I used to live was sold and our owner had to find us new homes.  An amazing NRI volunteer helped my owner place many of the dogs of other breeds that lived there (lots were having babies) and she got my owner to send me to my foster home in Washington State even!

Riding on a plane was soooooo scary but everyone was really nice.  I didn't want to come out of my crate for a long time.  My foster mom is really nice and takes good care of me.  She is very patient and soft spoken which I appreciate.  I have met many other Neos like me at my foster home and they are all so relaxed and not anxious or scared at all!  It is super quiet in the farm where I am now.  There are even horses and birds and cats and I love them all!  I hardly ever hear sirens, no one yells and there is a lot of food to eat and fresh water.

I have not been scared at my foster home except for a couple times.  One time someone was emptying the garbage in a dumpster and let the lid slam on the back side when they opened it.  The "bang" was like that same loud bang I used to hear all the time and it always meant bad things so it scared me sooooo bad I almost ran away.  My foster mom was so sad to see my reaction she immediately sad on the ground and called me to her in this pleading soft voice that I could tell she was scared too so I ran to her and just shivered in her arms for a while.  She spoke sweet to me that everything was ok and patted and rubbed me until I stopped shaking.  I know I shouldn't be scared anymore but it really is going to take me some time.  The things that used to happen every day in my life are not going to be forgotten very quickly, but I'm working on it.

I would really love to stay with my foster mom forever and I love and trust her.  I want to stay glued to her left side like we did in training because I know I can trust her and she will always protect me too.  However, I also see how hard she works and how many other dogs like me are also looking for homes.  She has told me that if she were to keep me that she could not help some of the others and I really want her to keep helping dogs like me get out of bad homes and into good ones so I think I will be okay.  Oh, and mom has told me we will wait as long as it takes for the perfect home for me so that makes me feel very good :-)

Please contact my foster mom for more information on me ;) ~ Love Lola.
